Finn Juhl

Finn Juhl (1912-1989) was a notable Danish architect and furniture designer who contributed significantly during the golden age of Danish design. He was known for his distinctive artistic style and was instrumental in introducing Danish Modern to America. Finn Juhl's designs exemplify the principle of form follows function, which is a hallmark of Danish modernism. However, his creations also embody a sense of freedom and creativity, making his work more unrestrained and imaginative than that of his contemporaries.

“Art has always been my main source of inspiration.
I’m fascinated by shapes which defy gravity
and create visual lightness.”

Prominent designs

Finn Juhl focused primarily on furniture design throughout his career, creating only a few buildings. One notable building is his own house in Ordrup, where he lived for more than 40 years until he passed away in 1989.

Among his most famous furniture designs are the Pelican Chair (1940), the Poet Sofa (1941), the FJ 45 Chair (1945) and the Chieftain Chair (1949). Finn Juhl was also an excellent lamp designer. In 1963, he created the Finn Juhl lamp, now known as the FJ Elements, which provides perfect lighting from all angles.

Danish Modern goes overseas

In the early 1950s, at the age of 38, Finn Juhl was commissioned by the Danish government to design the Trusteeship Council Chamber for the United Nations Headquarters in New York as a gift from Denmark. Also referred to as the Finn Juhl Chamber, it’s regarded as one of his major works today, playing a significant role in introducing the minimalistic Danish Modern design to America.
